Today's Earthquake Shakes Delhi:
The capital and its adjoining areas encountered tremors on Thursday afternoon. The seismic activity extended to the National Capital Region, affecting Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram as well.
As per the National Center for Seismology, the governmental nodal agency in India responsible for monitoring earthquake activity, the epicenter of the tremors was located in Afghanistan.
"Earthquake of Magnitude:6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km ,Location: Afghanistan," it wrote on X.
The seismic vibrations were also experienced in Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, and various other northern regions of India. According to reports from Pakistani media, the tremors were also sensed in cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, and those in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The earthquake tremors occurred at 2:50 pm in both India and Pakistan.
As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake's epicenter was located 241 kilometers north-northeast of Kabul, Afghanistan.
The seismic event induced panic among the populace, with reports of furniture shaking in Delhi and the National Capital Region. Fueled by fear, numerous individuals were said to have hastily evacuated their homes and workplaces.
Simultaneously, the Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in certain parts of Pakistan around 2:20 pm. PTI reported that the quake's epicenter was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
The US Geological Survey determined the quake to be of magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale. It originated at a depth of 206.6 km, approximately 44 km SSW of Jurm in Afghanistan.
